Environmental Health Officer – Public Protection (Building Safety)

About the role

The City of London Corporation is establishing a Private Sector Housing & Building Safety Team within its Port Health & Public Protection service. As an Environmental Health Officer – Public Protection (Building Safety), you will protect residents by enforcing housing standards and ensuring building safety.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate housing complaints and conduct HHSRS inspections.
• Manage HMO licensing, fire safety checks in mid‑ and high‑rise dwellings, and Renters’ Rights enforcement.
• Prepare warning letters, enforcement notices, and calculate civil penalties.
• Prohibit premises where serious risks exist and gather evidence for legal action.
• Supervise less‑experienced officers and contribute to service planning and project delivery.

Required profile

• BSc or MSc in Environmental Health or a CIEH‑approved qualification.
• Registration with the appropriate professional body.
• Strong professional judgement, communication, and the ability to influence behaviour in complex situations.
• Experience liaising with regulators, local authorities, and partner agencies.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the IDOX Uniform case‑management system.
