Environmental Protection Officer – Hybrid (Barnstaple)

About the role

This hybrid position offers an experienced Environmental Health Officer the chance to protect public health and the environment across Barnstaple and surrounding areas. You will work within a busy Regulatory Services team, investigating complaints and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate environmental protection complaints such as noise nuisance, pollution, anti‑social behaviour, air quality, and contaminated land.
• Carry out inspections, audits, monitoring activities and environmental assessments.
• Provide advice to residents, businesses and stakeholders on environmental legislation and compliance.
• Review planning and licensing applications and deliver specialist environmental health advice.
• Gather evidence, conduct interviews, prepare reports and serve statutory notices.
• Take enforcement action where required and liaise with partner agencies.
• Manage a varied caseload independently and respond to emergencies or out‑of‑hours incidents.

Required profile

• Degree or postgraduate qualification in Environmental Health or a related discipline.
• Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) and membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
• Previous experience delivering environmental protection services within a local authority.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for district travel.
