Experienced SENCo for Primary School with Autism Unit

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to lead the SEND provision in a large primary school in Portsmouth. The school hosts a specialised SEN unit for pupils with autism and other additional needs, offering a nurturing and structured environment where every child can thrive academically and personally.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and review the school’s SEND policy and practice.
• Work closely with senior leaders, teachers, families and external agencies to ensure high‑quality support for pupils.
• Monitor pupil progress, analyse data and report on statutory compliance.
• Lead inclusive practice, providing guidance and training to staff.
• Manage the SEN unit, coordinating resources and interventions.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCo) or willingness to work towards it.
• Proven experience as a SENCo or in a SEND leadership role.
• Strong understanding of autism and effective support strategies.
• Excellent leadership, organisational and communication skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of UK SEND legislation and best practice.
• Experience using pupil tracking and assessment tools.
