Experimental Physicist – Instrument Design

About the role

We are seeking an experimental physicist to join our client in Cambridge, working on cutting‑edge instrument design that enhances safety in areas such as airport scanning and objection detection. The role blends scientific investigation, computational modelling, rapid prototyping and transfer to manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Design and lead investigations into novel instrumentation concepts.
• Invent new approaches and develop computational models to predict performance.
• Rapidly prototype hardware and oversee manufacturing transfer.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers across diverse physics domains.
• Work on quantum technologies, sensing, electromagnetics, semiconductor physics, optics, sonar, ultrasound and AI‑driven algorithms.

Required profile

• Track record of academic excellence with a relevant postgraduate degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Eligibility for UK security clearance.
• Strong analytical mindset and ability to collaborate in expert multi‑disciplinary teams.
• Open to candidates of varying experience levels who are passionate about solving complex problems.
