About the role

Newton Colmore Consulting Ltd is seeking a senior Experimental Physicist specializing in photonics to join its defence‑focused R&D team in Cambridge. You will lead the design of highly complex sensing instruments, taking ideas from concept through to manufacturing, and contribute to cutting‑edge technology that protects lives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the full design cycle of photonic sensing systems, from invention and ideation to prototype development.
• Perform analysis and computational modelling to validate concepts.
• Transfer prototypes to manufacturing, ensuring quality and performance.
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists and innovators across multidisciplinary projects.
• Explore the application of machine learning and AI to enhance product development.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent experience in physics with a focus on optical physics, thermodynamics, electromagnetics or fluidics.
• Proven track record of delivering complex engineering solutions.
• Strong academic background and passion for breakthrough technology.
• Ability to obtain UK security clearance.
