Facilities Maintenance Operative – Southampton

About the role

We are looking for a Facilities Maintenance Operative to join a rail depot team in Southampton on an initial three‑month contract. The role is hands‑on and multi‑skilled, covering both planned and reactive maintenance of buildings, infrastructure and general facilities to keep the depot safe, compliant and fully operational.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across depot buildings and facilities.
• Perform plumbing repairs including taps, sinks, toilets and pipework.
• Undertake general fabric work such as carpentry, door adjustments, lock changes, minor repairs, painting and decorating.
• Execute basic electrical tasks – replace light fittings, lamps, sockets, switches and identify minor faults.
• Support inspections, report defects and maintain accurate maintenance records and job sheets.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a Facilities Maintenance Operative, Fabric Technician, Maintenance Engineer or similar multi‑skilled role.
• Strong building‑fabric and plumbing knowledge with the ability to carry out basic electrical maintenance safely.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver both reactive and planned maintenance efficiently.
• Health & safety awareness and, where possible, relevant electrical or plumbing qualifications.
