Financial Controller – Finance Team Lead

About the role

We are seeking a technically strong Financial Controller to join the senior finance team of a globally recognised performing arts charity based in London. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will be responsible for safeguarding the organisation’s financial health while supporting its artistic mission.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the financial accounting team, ensuring high‑quality month‑end close and balance‑sheet integrity.
• Manage treasury, cash‑flow, banking relationships and payment processes.
• Prepare statutory accounts and coordinate external audit activities.
• Oversee charity tax compliance, including VAT, Gift Aid and other regulatory reporting.
• Maintain and enhance financial controls, systems and governance frameworks.
• Support finance system optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the organisation.
• Deputise for the Head of Finance when required.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with solid technical accounting expertise.
• Proven experience leading or contributing significantly to a financial accounting function.
• Experience preparing statutory accounts and managing external audits.
• Strong knowledge of financial controls, balance‑sheet management and compliance.
• Experience with VAT, payroll oversight and charity regulatory reporting.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
