Financial Controller

About the role

CMA Recruitment Group is partnering with a long‑established family‑owned commercial contractor in Chandler's Ford to hire a Financial Controller. The business, with a £30m turnover and 30‑40 staff, delivers construction and refurbishment projects for education, healthcare, community and research clients across the South of England. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is the senior finance position within the company.

Key responsibilities

• Full ownership of the finance function, supported by a dedicated finance assistant.
• Preparation of monthly management accounts and project reports for the board.
• Contract invoicing and credit control across up to 15 live projects ranging from £50,000 to £12m.
• Coding and entry of subcontractor and supplier invoices, daily bank reconciliation and timely payments.
• Cash‑flow monitoring, forecasting, budgeting, overheads management and cost‑reduction reviews.
• Management of CIS and VAT returns, Companies House filings, payroll and liaison with external accountants.
• Oversight of business insurances, financial policies, procedures and minimising financial risk.

Required profile

• Advanced accounting qualification or equivalent experience, including practice‑based candidates.
• Essential experience in the construction sector.
• Hands‑on ability to manage the full A‑to‑Z finance function.
• Well‑organised, accurate under pressure and capable of prioritising competing demands.
• Confidence working with a small leadership team and comfortable both challenging and being challenged.
