Financial Controls Manager – 2 Year Contract

About the role

This position is responsible for strengthening the financial integrity of the organisation by leading the monthly Balance Sheet reconciliation process and providing assurance over the internal control environment. It is a full‑time, contractor role based in Edinburgh.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the monthly Balance Sheet reconciliation, ensuring all reconciliations are documented, timely and accurate.
• Investigate and resolve reconciling items, aged balances and historic differences, maintaining audit trails.
• Support month‑end and year‑end close, monitor suspense, accrual, pre‑payment and control accounts.
• Identify control weaknesses, perform root‑cause analysis and implement permanent process improvements.
• Provide evidence for internal and external auditors and support statutory accounts preparation.
• Collaborate with AP, AR, payroll, treasury and other stakeholders, offering guidance on accounting and control matters.
• Review, recommend and implement bespoke reconciliation software to improve automation and timeliness.

Required profile

• Proven experience in financial control, balance‑sheet reconciliations and general‑ledger accounting.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a team and manage complex reconciliation processes.
• Strong analytical skills with a track record of root‑cause diagnostics and process optimisation.
• Excellent communication skills for stakeholder engagement across all levels.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of general‑ledger accounting and financial reporting standards.
• Experience with balance‑sheet reconciliation and month‑end close procedures.
• Ability to analyse unusual account movements and implement control improvements.
