Fly Laboratory Technician (Part Time, Fixed Term)

About the role
The Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge is seeking a part‑time Fly Laboratory Technician to support its Fly Facility. The role involves maintaining Drosophila stocks and assisting with the facility’s daily operations, teaching support and specialised services.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and organise Drosophila stock collections as part of the stock‑keeping service.
- Assist with the preparation of fly food and support the microinjection service.
- Provide material preparation for Drosophila‑based teaching sessions.
- Cover for staff absences and help manage periods of increased demand.
- Contribute to the general running and upkeep of the facility.
Required profile
- GCSE (or equivalent) grades A‑C / NVQ level 2 in a science subject or comparable practical experience.
- Experience working in an academic or commercial laboratory environment.
- Basic IT competence and strong organisational abilities.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with a methodical approach to problem‑solving.
- Previous experience with Drosophila is desirable but not essential; training will be provided.

What we offer
- Part‑time contract of 18.25 hours per week (0.5 FTE), Monday‑Friday.
- Fixed‑term appointment for an initial twelve‑month period.
