Forest Craftsperson

About the role

You will support the beat forester in shaping and managing the forest land, carrying out a variety of operational tasks and inspections. You will also work alongside the Wild Neroche Project Officer to deliver practical interventions that restore natural processes across the landscape, while championing a strong health and safety culture.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Wild Neroche project with practical tasks such as hand‑planting, tree‑guard installation, fence repair and vegetation control.
• Carry out clearing and maintenance work including high pruning, cutting back and felling of ancient and veteran trees.
• Manage tree safety through inspections (LANTRA Basic Tree Survey certification), safety signage, fencing and remedial work, and assist arboricultural contractors.
• Conduct tree surveys to identify potentially hazardous trees and produce timber‑marketing data (tariffing, stocking density, ecological and recreation trail inspections).
• Maintain estate infrastructure – roads, rides, rights of way, permissive paths, gates and barriers.
• Deliver work programmes efficiently, complete risk assessments and adhere to FISA (Forest Industry Safety Accord) health‑and‑safety standards.
• Gather operational data, keep accurate records and support occasional woodland creation projects.

• Ability to work safely and effectively in a forest environment.

• Physical fitness for manual, outdoor tasks and use of forestry tools.
