Head of Additional Learning Support (ALS)

About the role

The college is seeking an experienced leader to head its Additional Learning Support (ALS) service. This senior position has no teaching commitment and focuses on shaping inclusive practice, driving SEND strategy, and supporting learners with special educational needs across a thriving further education environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the ALS team, including two ALS Leads, Learning Support Assistants and an ALS Administrator.
• Develop and implement the college’s SEND strategy in partnership with the Director of Student Services.
• Oversee EHCPs, high‑needs provision, Exam Access Arrangements and JCQ compliance.
• Build strong relationships with curriculum teams, parents, local authorities and external agencies.
• Use data‑driven quality improvement initiatives to enhance learner outcomes and inclusion.
• Manage the ALS and SEND budget, maximising funding and ensuring financial compliance.

Required profile

• Proven experience in an FE or school setting as a Head of ALS, SENCO, Deputy SENCO or similar leadership role.
• Level 5 SEND qualification or equivalent degree/experience.
• In‑depth knowledge of high‑needs funding, EHCPs and SEND legislation.
• Strong leadership, communication and partnership skills.
