Head of External Reporting and Data Quality

About the role

The Head of External Reporting and Data Quality will lead the preparation, validation and submission of all student‑related statutory returns for a higher education institution. Reporting accuracy underpins funding, compliance and strategic decision‑making, making this a critical leadership position.

Key responsibilities

• Own end‑to‑end delivery of approximately 30 external data returns each year, including the HESA submission.
• Develop and maintain robust data governance frameworks and quality assurance processes.
• Manage the annual reporting cycle, coordinating peak submission periods.
• Lead, mentor and develop a team of 15‑16 staff members.
• Act as a trusted advisor, promoting best practice in data management across the institution.

Required profile

• Significant experience within UK higher education, preferably in data, management information or data‑quality leadership.
• Strategic thinker capable of translating complex data landscapes into clear outcomes.
• Strong understanding of the student data lifecycle and related structures.

Required skills

• Familiarity with student record systems such as Banner (Illucian), SITS or TechnologyOne.
• Experience with HESA reporting and other statutory data collections.
