Head of Finance – Charity

About the role

The Freelands Foundation is seeking a Head of Finance to steer its financial strategy and support rapid growth, including a major capital project and programme expansion. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations, you will lead the finance function and ensure robust reporting, compliance and cash management.

Key responsibilities

• Lead annual budgeting, re‑forecasting and scenario modelling in partnership with department heads.
• Maintain accurate cash‑flow forecasts and manage relationships with banking partners and finance software providers.
• Produce monthly management accounts and high‑quality financial reports for senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.
• Oversee the year‑end audit, statutory accounts and compliance with Charity Commission and Companies House requirements.
• Prepare and file US tax returns for the foundation, including FBAR and Form 990‑PF.
• Line‑manage the Finance Officer and ensure the finance team operates efficiently.

Required profile

• Qualified Chartered Accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with at least five years’ senior finance experience.
• Significant experience in a finance leadership role within the charity or non‑profit sector.
• In‑depth knowledge of UK Charity SORP and US Private Foundation regulatory requirements.
• Proven ability to develop and execute financial strategy aligned with organisational objectives.
