Head of Financial Accounting

About the role

We are seeking an experienced qualified accountant to lead the financial accounting function within a values‑driven higher education institution. The role combines technical expertise with strategic leadership, reporting to the Director of Finance and Strategic Planning.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the year‑end close and produce high‑quality annual financial statements on schedule.
• Serve as the primary liaison for internal and external auditors, coordinating audit activities and ensuring timely delivery of accurate information.
• Monitor and implement changes to accounting standards, regulatory requirements and sector developments.
• Prepare and submit statutory and regulatory returns to HMRC, ONS, Education and Skills Funding Agency, Charity Commission, Office for Students and other bodies.
• Oversee balance‑sheet governance, reconciliations, fixed‑asset accounting, capital reporting and depreciation forecasts.
• Manage treasury functions including cash‑flow forecasting, banking arrangements, credit‑card administration, loans and investments.
• Lead taxation reporting, covering VAT and partial exemption calculations.
• Support finance systems, processes and the Chart of Accounts to maintain accurate and efficient reporting.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with substantial experience in higher education or a similarly regulated sector.
• Proven ability to lead and develop finance teams, delivering clear advice to senior stakeholders and governance committees.
• Strong analytical mindset with a focus on improving financial control environments.
• Excellent communication skills and the capacity to build trusted relationships across the organisation.
