Head of Financial Accounting

About the role

Mackie Myers is partnering with a large Multi‑Academy Trust to appoint a Head of Financial Accounting. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance, you will lead a diverse finance team and drive the organisation’s finance transformation agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Financial Accounting function, fostering a high‑performing, collaborative culture.
• Oversee treasury management, cash‑flow planning and banking arrangements across a multi‑site environment.
• Own financial controls, policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and effectiveness.
• Manage the monthly close process, guaranteeing balance‑sheet integrity and timely reporting.
• Prepare and audit statutory accounts and other external returns.
• Act as the primary contact for internal and external audit, implementing recommendations.
• Oversee VAT and taxation activities and manage external adviser relationships.
• Drive continuous improvement of finance processes, systems and automation.
• Partner with senior leaders on governance, risk management and compliance matters.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading financial accounting teams in complex organisations.
• Strong background in treasury, statutory reporting, taxation and financial controls.
• Ability to manage audit processes and implement improvement recommendations.
• Experience working with senior stakeholders to support decision‑making.
