Head of Health & Safety

About the role

We are seeking a senior Health & Safety leader to shape and drive the safety strategy for a major UK retail organisation with a national network of stores, distribution centres and logistics operations. Reporting to the Executive Leadership Team, you will influence board‑level decisions and embed a proactive safety culture across a fast‑paced, multi‑site environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a comprehensive Health & Safety strategy aligned with business objectives.
• Lead and mentor Health & Safety teams across retail, warehousing and transport divisions.
• Drive a positive safety culture and embed safety considerations into operational decision‑making.
• Ensure compliance with all UK health & safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee incident investigation, risk management and organisational learning.
• Manage relationships with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders.
• Produce board‑level reports, present performance trends and recommend strategic actions.
• Lead major change programmes and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Significant senior‑level Health & Safety leadership experience in a large retail environment.
• Proven track record of developing and implementing business‑wide safety strategies.
• Strong influencing skills with directors, executives and senior operational leaders.
• Deep knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and best practice.
• Experience leading geographically dispersed teams and driving cultural change.
• Professional qualifications such as GradIOSH/CMIOSH and NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6).
