Head of Midwifery (Band 8C) – 4‑month contract

About the role

Vivid Healthcare is recruiting a senior Head of Midwifery (Band 8C) for a leading NHS Trust in Portsmouth. This four‑month temporary position provides strategic and operational leadership for the maternity service, driving quality, safety and transformation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide professional, strategic and operational leadership for maternity services.
• Lead delivery of safe, effective, high‑quality maternity care.
• Support national maternity initiatives and quality‑improvement programmes.
• Collaborate with senior clinical and operational leaders across the Trust.
• Ensure compliance with CQC standards, NHS England guidance and national policies.
• Oversee workforce planning, governance, risk and performance management.
• Drive service transformation and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Current NMC registration as a Midwife.
• Significant experience at Band 8C Head of Midwifery level or equivalent.
• Extensive NHS leadership experience within maternity services.
• Proven ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong knowledge of maternity governance, patient safety and quality standards.
• Experience managing complex operational and strategic challenges.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
