Head of Rolling Stock Engineering Delivery

About the role

The Head of Rolling Stock Engineering Delivery will lead the engineering authority for London Underground’s rolling stock, ensuring safe, reliable and high‑performing trains across the entire fleet. Reporting to the Head of Engineering Delivery, this senior position sits within TfL’s Engineering & Asset Strategy Directorate, a centre of engineering excellence serving the world’s most complex transport network.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and define the engineering strategy for rolling stock.
• Act as the single point of accountability for safety‑critical decisions.
• Lead engineering acceptance of major capital programmes.
• Drive lifecycle strategies, including refurbishment and replacement programmes.
• Ensure regulatory compliance, including ROGS.
• Oversee fleet performance and incident response.
• Align engineering decisions with business priorities.
• Lead large matrix teams to deliver engineering outcomes.

Required profile

• Significant senior leadership experience in a complex engineering or railway environment.
• Deep expertise in rolling stock engineering, asset management and capital programme delivery.
• Strong background in mechanical and/or electrical engineering, ideally within rail.
• Experience managing the interface between legacy assets and new technology.
• Ability to make complex, risk‑based engineering decisions quickly.
• Commercial and financial acumen to balance cost, safety and performance.
• Proven influence at executive level and clear communication of technical issues.
• Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) preferred.
