Head of Training and Education – Lead UCU's National Programme

About the role

University and College Union is seeking a dynamic leader to head its Training and Education team. The role will shape and deliver a national learning programme for UCU members and activists, supporting the union’s strategic and industrial priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the strategic direction of UCU’s national education and training portfolio.
• Develop national training policy, monitor standards and ensure quality delivery.
• Assess learning needs across branches, regions and stakeholder groups and prioritise provision.
• Design and continuously improve a high‑quality learning offer using digital, blended and innovative delivery methods.
• Build and maintain relationships with external partners including the TUC, colleges, tutors and other unions.
• Oversee delivery of training programmes in response to branch, regional and national demand.
• Manage the training budget, ensuring expenditure stays within fiscal limits.

Required profile

• GCSE‑level (or equivalent) qualification in maths and English.
• Experience working in a trade union, not‑for‑profit or similar environment.
• Understanding of trade‑union education aims, adult‑learning methodology and the union learning agenda.
• Proven ability to design, organise and deliver training programmes at a strategic level.
• Track record of delivering projects within an agreed budget.

• Design and delivery of virtual, blended and digital learning programmes.

What we offer

• Competitive salary of £72,414 per annum (inclusive of London Allowance).
• Permanent full‑time contract, 35 hours per week.
