Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Backwell (Permanent)

About the role

We are supporting a new specialist school opening in January 2027 and are looking for an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join the team in Backwell. The school will serve 96 pupils aged 5‑19 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This permanent, full‑time position offers a rewarding opportunity to shape a nurturing, inclusive learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead whole‑class lessons and provide cover for the class teacher when required.
• Plan, prepare and deliver differentiated learning activities tailored to individual needs.
• Support pupils with personal care, promoting independence and wellbeing.
• Monitor, record and report pupil progress and behaviour.
• Assist with curriculum planning and resource preparation.
• Act as a role model for new staff and mentor less‑experienced teaching assistants.

Required profile

• Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification.
• GCSE English and Maths (grade C/4 or above).
• Experience supporting pupils with SEND, particularly ASD and SEMH.
• Strong classroom management and behaviour support abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Experience delivering engaging lessons to diverse learners.
• Knowledge of safeguarding principles and child protection procedures.

• Salary £27,463 – £29,982 per year, dependent on experience.
