Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – ASD Resource Base

About the role

This position is for a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) working within a specialist Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Resource Base at a secondary school in Nailsea. You will support pupils aged 11‑16, helping them access both specialist provision and the mainstream curriculum.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engaging, small‑group lessons within the ASD Resource Base.
• Adapt mainstream schemes of work to meet individual learning needs.
• Support pupils in developing independence, confidence and academic progress.
• Plan lessons collaboratively with teachers and contribute to the full planning and assessment cycle.
• Provide targeted interventions for communication, social development and academic achievement.
• Monitor progress, keep accurate records and give feedback to teachers and the SEND team.
• Contribute to IEPs, EHCP reviews and wider SEND provision.
• Build positive relationships and maintain a calm, structured learning environment.

Required profile

• HLTA status or a relevant Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent experience).
• At least two years’ experience as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant or HLTA in a school setting.
• Passion for inclusive education and supporting pupils with autism.
• Patient, proactive and able to work collaboratively with SENCO, teachers and pastoral staff.

Required skills

• Experience adapting curriculum materials for pupils with additional educational needs.
• Ability to deliver differentiated instruction to small groups.
• Strong record‑keeping and progress‑monitoring skills.
