HM Inspector – Railway Human Factors Specialist

About the role

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is seeking an HM Inspector of Railway Human Factors to join its Railway Safety Directorate. Working across the UK rail network, you will apply human‑factors expertise to improve safety and operational performance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert advice on workload, human error, fatigue, and non‑technical skills to industry stakeholders.
• Conduct inspections, investigations and liaison activities related to human‑factors integration and design.
• Support competence management and workplace assessments within the rail sector.
• Collaborate with internal teams to develop guidance and strategic interventions for high‑risk areas.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of health and safety risk control across the rail system.

Required profile

• Demonstrated expertise in human factors, gained in academia, industry, or a safety regulator.
• Analytical and pragmatic approach with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Experience or familiarity with the rail industry or other high‑hazard sectors.
• Willingness to develop sector‑specific knowledge and adapt to evolving regulatory frameworks.
