Housing Standards Officer – Private Rented Sector

About the role

This office‑based position supports a reputable housing provider in improving standards across the private rented sector in London. You will conduct inspections, enforce regulations and work closely with landlords, agents and tenants to raise housing quality.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate complaints about poor housing conditions in the private sector.
• Carry out HHSRS assessments and property inspections.
• Regulate Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
• Issue statutory notices and pursue enforcement action where required.
• Prepare case files, witness statements and legal documentation for tribunals and courts.
• Support Mandatory, Additional and Selective Licensing schemes.
• Investigate empty homes and promote re‑use of properties.
• Encourage compliance with Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) and other energy initiatives.
• Maintain accurate records using housing enforcement management systems.

Required profile

• Experience in private‑sector housing, environmental health or housing enforcement.
• Strong knowledge of the Housing Act 2004, HHSRS and HMO legislation.
• Proven ability to conduct inspections and assess housing hazards.
• Familiarity with enforcement procedures, statutory notices and legal processes.
• Experience preparing evidence and attending court or tribunal hearings.
