Import Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Import Manager to lead the import operations of a fast‑growing freight forwarding business based at London Heathrow Airport. You will be responsible for ensuring compliant, efficient handling of all import shipments while driving performance, cost control and team development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day leadership, coaching and support to direct reports and the wider operations team.
• Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training and retention to maintain appropriate staffing levels.
• Ensure efficient and compliant processing of all import shipments in line with customer requirements and company standards.
• Act as the primary escalation point for operational, customs, compliance and customer service issues.
• Monitor departmental KPIs, productivity, service levels and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
• Manage departmental budgets, cost control and P&L performance.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, carriers, customs authorities and overseas partners.

Required profile

• 7‑10 years’ experience in import, customs, freight forwarding or logistics operations.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience managing operational teams in a fast‑paced environment.
• Proven leadership capability, including coaching, performance management, succession planning and recruitment.
• Strong commercial awareness with responsibility for budgets and P&L.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of HMRC regulations and customs compliance requirements.
• Expertise in import processes, air freight, customs brokerage and multimodal transport.
• Ability to manage KPIs, service levels and productivity metrics.
• Experience with departmental budgeting, cost control and profit‑and‑loss management.
