Interim Assistant Director – Building Control

About the role

The Council is seeking an Interim Assistant Director to lead its Building Control Service for an initial six‑month period. Reporting to the Strategic Director for Economy & Sustainability, you will provide both strategic direction and day‑to‑day operational leadership, ensuring compliance with the Building Regulations, Building Safety Act and fire safety legislation while maintaining a customer‑focused service.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Council’s Building Control Service, overseeing all statutory functions.
• Ensure full compliance with Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act and related legislation.
• Direct inspection and regulation of high‑rise and higher‑risk buildings.
• Collaborate with the Building Safety Regulator, HSE and London Fire Brigade.
• Drive service improvement, performance management and customer satisfaction initiatives.
• Develop strategies to maximise service income and market share.
• Manage budgets, fees, charging structures and financial performance.

Required profile

• Significant senior management experience within a Building Control environment.
• Extensive knowledge of Building Regulations, Building Safety legislation and fire safety requirements.
• Proven track record of leading inspection, enforcement and compliance functions.
• Experience delivering income‑generating, customer‑focused services.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and financial performance.

Required skills
