Interim Financial Controller – 6‑Month Fixed‑Term

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Interim Financial Controller to join a well‑established engineering and manufacturing business in Exeter on a six‑month fixed‑term basis. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will play a pivotal role in delivering accurate management information and supporting the finance function during a period of growth and transition.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit & loss and balance sheet statements.
• Produce detailed variance analysis and commentary for senior management.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning activities.
• Oversee the monthly payroll process and ensure timely PAYE submissions.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns.
• Complete balance‑sheet reconciliations and month‑end/year‑end reporting.
• Develop financial reports, KPIs and management information packs.
• Maintain strong financial controls and provide insight to aid decision‑making.
• Provide light line‑management and guidance to junior finance team members.

Required profile

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified (or equivalent experience).
• Previous management‑accounting experience in an SME or engineering/manufacturing environment.
• Proven ability to produce management accounts and deliver meaningful financial analysis.
• Understanding of payroll, PAYE and VAT processes.
• Strong Excel and finance‑systems proficiency.
• Independent, proactive and comfortable partnering with senior stakeholders.

What we offer

• Salary up to £75,000 per annum (range £48,000‑£75,000).
