Interim Financial Controller (Birmingham)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Interim Financial Controller to support a small‑to‑medium enterprise in Birmingham. The role is hands‑on, reporting directly to the Managing Director and covering the full finance function on a temporary basis.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and present quarterly accounts, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash‑flow forecasts and KPI reports.
• Monitor financial performance, analyse variances and provide recommendations to senior management.
• Maintain and strengthen financial controls, manage balance‑sheet reconciliations and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
• Oversee cash‑flow, working‑capital management, budgeting and forecasting activities.
• Identify cost‑saving opportunities and drive financial efficiency.
• Act as the key Sage 200 user, optimise the system, ensure data integrity and support enhancements.
• Manage purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control, payroll liaison and banking transactions.
• Handle VAT returns, statutory submissions and support external auditors.
• Partner with the business owner and senior team to provide commercial analysis, budgeting support and drive improvement projects.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager.
• Experience working within a small or SME environment.
• Demonstrable expertise using Sage 200.
• Proven ability to manage cash‑flow and budgets.

Required skills

• Sage 200 (advanced user).
• Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables.
