Interim Financial Controller (Contract)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Interim Financial Controller to lead the finance function of a well‑established not‑for‑profit organisation during a period of transformation. Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will own financial reporting, governance and compliance while partnering with senior leaders to improve processes and shape the future finance strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the production of monthly management accounts and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting.
• Prepare high‑quality financial reports and analysis for senior leadership, Trustees and governance committees.
• Act as finance lead across audit, risk and investment matters, maintaining strong governance and regulatory compliance.
• Support the year‑end process and serve as the primary finance contact during external audit.
• Review and strengthen financial controls, policies and procedures to embed best practice.
• Optimise the recently implemented finance system, identifying opportunities for reporting and efficiency gains.
• Collaborate with senior stakeholders and external advisers to review the finance function structure and support organisational change.
• Provide leadership and guidance to the wider finance team, building strong relationships across the organisation.

Required profile

• Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent); exceptional experience‑based candidates also considered.
• Proven experience at Financial Controller level or in a comparable senior finance leadership role.
• Charity sector experience, especially with investment portfolios or complex income streams, is highly desirable.
• Excellent technical accounting knowledge covering financial reporting, governance and external audit.
• Experience reviewing and implementing finance systems.
