Interim SEN Department Lead – Primary School (Sept–Jan)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced SEN professional to lead a primary school’s Special Educational Needs unit on an interim basis from September to January. The role combines strategic leadership of the SEN provision with a modest teaching timetable within the unit.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day operation of the SEN unit, ensuring high‑quality, inclusive provision.
• Plan, deliver and monitor tailored learning programmes for pupils with diverse additional needs.
• Provide direct teaching within the unit as part of your timetable.
• Lead and develop Teaching Assistants, coordinating deployment and professional growth.
• Collaborate with the SENCO, senior leadership, teachers, parents and external agencies.
• Track pupil progress and implement appropriate interventions.

Required profile

• Significant experience working with primary‑aged pupils with SEN.
• Proven leadership or management experience of an SEN provision, resource base or specialist unit.
• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent senior leadership experience in SEN.
• Strong understanding of a range of needs, including Autism, ADHD, speech & language, and social‑emotional & mental health.
• Excellent communication, organisational and leadership abilities.

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or comparable senior SEN leadership qualification.
