Internal Audit Executive

About the role

Barnet Council is seeking a permanent Internal Audit Executive to join its Internal Audit team. The role is hybrid, with 2‑3 days per week in the office (NW9 4EW). You will provide independent audit advice and assurance across a range of council services, ensuring value for money and compliance with statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute audit assignments in line with the Annual Audit Plan.
• Conduct compliance and systems‑based reviews unsupervised, from scoping to final reporting.
• Perform follow‑up reviews and ensure timely closure of audit findings.
• Apply a risk‑based approach consistent with Global Internal Audit Standards and the council's Audit Manual.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of accounting standards, local government finance frameworks, and procurement regulations.
• Manage audit budgets and report any potential variations to the Head of Internal Audit.
• Contribute to service development projects and continuously improve audit methodologies.

Required profile

• Relevant professional qualification (CIPFA, IIA, AAT or other CCAB‑recognised).
• Degree or equivalent education.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an internal audit team within a public‑sector organisation.
• Strong understanding of local government finance, S151 regulations, and procurement contracts.
