Island Nurse - Hoy

About the role

The Island Nurse will join a small health team delivering primary and community care to the residents of Hoy, an island of approximately 388 people. This role offers the chance to develop a broad range of generalist nursing skills in a remote, rural setting while contributing to NHS Orkney’s vision of excellence in remote healthcare.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan and monitor the quality of health care for the island population across the life span.
• Provide community and practice nursing services, including health promotion and chronic disease management.
• Work autonomously without immediate hospital support, using remote consultation tools and weekly Teams meetings for peer support.
• Collaborate with local GPs and the wider Orkney health network to ensure seamless 24/7 care.

Required profile

• Experienced Band 6 nurse with up‑to‑date clinical knowledge.
• Adaptable, resourceful and professionally accountable.
• Motivated to work in a remote, rural environment and develop a wide range of skills.
• Non‑medical prescribing qualification (essential).
