IT Security Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced IT Security Manager to lead and develop the cyber security function for a government organisation. Working on a hybrid schedule, you will spend 2‑3 days a week on‑site in Hampshire and the remainder remotely, shaping strategy, managing risk and ensuring a resilient security posture.

Key responsibilities

• Define and deliver a cyber security strategy aligned with organisational objectives.
• Lead governance, risk management and compliance initiatives, maintaining the ISMS.
• Ensure alignment with ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials standards.
• Identify, assess and mitigate cyber risks, keeping the risk register up to date.
• Own incident response capability, testing and improving response plans.
• Monitor emerging threats and advise on appropriate mitigations.
• Manage and develop a small cyber security team.
• Oversee security controls, tools and processes, and produce regular insight reports for senior leadership.
• Manage supplier relationships and support security‑related procurement.
• Promote a strong security culture through awareness and training initiatives.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a cyber security management or leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of recognised frameworks such as ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials.
• Experience overseeing governance, risk and assurance activities.
• Broad technical understanding across networks, cloud and infrastructure.
• Hands‑on experience leading or coordinating cyber incident response.
• Ability to translate technical risk into clear business‑focused messaging.
• Experience producing reports and presenting to senior stakeholders.
• People leadership experience, including mentoring or managing teams.
• Experience managing third‑party suppliers and security tooling.
