About the role
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is seeking a qualified Lawyer to join its dynamic Legal Services team. Working across several UK locations, you will support senior leaders and contribute to improving the police complaints system in England and Wales.
Key responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice to staff on casework, investigations and policy development.
- Prepare and present cases for police misconduct hearings and represent IOPC in judicial reviews, inquests and other proceedings.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with solicitors, police forces, hearing units and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to the creation of organisational policy within the Strategy, Engagement & Communications directorate.
- Handle a caseload of sensitive matters that may attract media scrutiny.
Required profile
- Qualified solicitor with experience in public‑sector or police‑related law.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high‑profile, confidential cases.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; Welsh language ability is desirable.
- Commitment to the IOPC’s core values and an inclusive work environment.
Required skills
- In‑depth knowledge of UK criminal and administrative law.
- Experience with judicial review, inquests and police misconduct proceedings.
- Legal research, case preparation and advocacy skills.
