Lawyer – Welsh Desirable

About the role

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is seeking a qualified lawyer with a willingness to work in Wales. You will join a dynamic Legal Services team that supports senior leaders and contributes to improving the police complaints system across England and Wales.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to staff across investigations, oversight, casework and policy directorates.
• Deliver specialist guidance on decision‑making, case preparation and presentation at misconduct hearings.
• Manage a caseload that includes litigation, inquests, judicial reviews and police misconduct proceedings.
• Represent the IOPC in court, judicial review actions and other legal proceedings.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with solicitors, police forces, hearing units, misconduct panel chairs and other external stakeholders.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor or barrister with experience in public law, administrative law or related litigation.
• Proven ability to handle high‑profile, sensitive matters under media scrutiny.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with senior officials, police representatives and external counsel.
• Commitment to the IOPC’s core values and an inclusive workplace culture.
