Lead Design Engineer – Rail Transport

About the role

DG8 Design & Engineering is seeking a Lead Design Engineer to take technical responsibility for delivering compliant rail vehicle interior projects. You will work from our Derby office, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs meet legal, safety and quality standards from concept through to implementation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop concepts, create 3D CAD models and produce detailed technical drawings for rail interior products.
• Own assigned projects technically, guaranteeing compliance with all relevant specifications and standards.
• Guide and mentor junior design engineers, providing technical direction and review.
• Participate in design reviews with customers and internal teams, ensuring robust solutions.
• Check and approve engineering outputs, including CAD models and drawings, according to DG8 processes.
• Coordinate with customers, suppliers and multidisciplinary colleagues to progress designs.
• Conduct on‑site vehicle surveys when required to support the design process.

Required profile

• Proven experience in design engineering for rail or related transport sectors.
• Ability to lead technical delivery and ensure compliance with standards.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Willingness to mentor junior engineers and contribute to team coordination.

Required skills

• 3D CAD modelling (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar).
• Production of technical drawings and documentation.
• Design review participation and approval processes.
• On‑site vehicle survey techniques.
