Lead Engineering Technician

About the role

Saab UK is seeking a Lead Engineering Technician to manage the daily operations of its underwater robotics R&D facility in Fareham. The role blends hands‑on technical work, such as building and maintaining test equipment, with planning, team coordination and safety oversight to support cutting‑edge electric underwater technology.

Key responsibilities

• Own the assigned area, ensuring all assets are operational and fit for purpose.
• Act as Safety Lead, maintaining compliance with company protocols and regulatory standards, and keeping risk assessments up to date.
• Champion 5S workplace optimisation to maximise productivity and efficiency.
• Manage equipment calibration status in line with the company’s calibration recall process.
• Perform practical engineering tasks, including the design, assembly and testing of specialised equipment.
• Coordinate the daily work of technicians, allocating tasks and monitoring progress to meet operational goals.
• Maintain a safe, organised and efficient working environment.

Required profile

• Proven experience in an engineering or R&D environment, preferably within defence or robotics.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team and manage day‑to‑day operations.
• Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and risk assessment procedures.
• Experience with equipment maintenance, calibration and asset management.
• Familiarity with 5S principles and continuous improvement practices.
