Lead Software Developer – Digital Services

About the role

Lead the teams transforming digital services that support land and property ownership across England and Wales for HM Land Registry. You will provide technical leadership, support engineering teams and help improve software design, development and maintenance. The role is permanent and based in South Croydon with flexible hybrid working.

Key responsibilities

• Guide a team of developers through the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with architects, product owners and delivery teams to shape technical solutions and refine requirements.
• Mentor and coach developers, fostering capability growth and best‑practice engineering.
• Contribute to software design decisions and ensure high‑quality, maintainable code.
• Support both existing digital services and new transformation projects.

Required profile

• Strong professional experience in software development, operating at senior developer level.
• Proven ability to lead and support development teams in a complex, public‑sector environment.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
