Lead Swimming Teacher – Thamesmead

About the role

GLL is seeking an experienced Lead Swimming Teacher to join the team at Thamesmead Leisure Centre. In this role you will deliver high‑quality swimming lessons, ensure pupil safety and guide a team of fellow teachers to maintain consistent standards across the centre.

Key responsibilities

• Provide a welcoming, professional poolside service and uphold the centre’s positive image.
• Ensure the safety of pupils during lessons and enforce all relevant health, safety and safeguarding regulations.
• Lead, motivate and mentor a team of swimming teachers, coordinating lesson registers, grouping swimmers and managing teacher‑to‑pupil ratios.
• Monitor and record pupil progression, supporting learners to achieve awards and meet expected standards.
• Assist with new enrolments and re‑enrolments, and attend teacher meetings and training sessions.

Required profile

• Approachable, patient and able to build trust with pupils and parents.
• Strong understanding of child protection policies and relevant legislation.
• Experience in delivering swimming instruction to a range of abilities.

Required skills

• STA Certificate level or Swim England Level 2 qualification.
• National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches (preferred).
• Knowledge of health and safety standards applicable to aquatic environments.
