About the role
The Northumberland Skills Service, part of Northumberland County Council, is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to work on a term‑time basis with post‑16 learners who have special educational needs (SEN). This full‑time, fixed‑term position (until 20/08/2027) offers the chance to make a real difference in young people’s educational journeys.
Key responsibilities
- Support and deliver accessible learning programmes, workshops and courses for SEN learners.
- Collaborate with lecturing staff to develop and adapt learning activities.
- Implement targets set out in each learner’s Individual Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).
- Provide one‑to‑one and group‑based learning support, ensuring inclusion in classroom activities.
- Assist in creating or modifying resources in line with advice from educational psychologists or external agencies.
- Maintain an inclusive learning environment and use positive reinforcement techniques.
- Facilitate small‑group interactions and peer support.
Required profile
- Experience working with children with SEN in a post‑16 setting.
- GCSE/O Level or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English.
- Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification recognised by the National Occupational Standards for Supporting Teaching and Learning (NOS‑STL).
- Understanding of diverse social, cultural and physical needs of pupils.
- Interest in how young people learn and behave, and ability to act as a positive role model.
- Passionate commitment to supporting young people.
