Learning Support Assistant

About the role

The Northumberland Skills Service, part of Northumberland County Council, is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to work on a term‑time basis with post‑16 learners who have special educational needs (SEN). This full‑time, fixed‑term position (until 20/08/2027) offers the chance to make a real difference in young people’s educational journeys.

Key responsibilities

• Support and deliver accessible learning programmes, workshops and courses for SEN learners.
• Collaborate with lecturing staff to develop and adapt learning activities.
• Implement targets set out in each learner’s Individual Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).
• Provide one‑to‑one and group‑based learning support, ensuring inclusion in classroom activities.
• Assist in creating or modifying resources in line with advice from educational psychologists or external agencies.
• Maintain an inclusive learning environment and use positive reinforcement techniques.
• Facilitate small‑group interactions and peer support.

Required profile

• Experience working with children with SEN in a post‑16 setting.
• GCSE/O Level or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English.
• Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification recognised by the National Occupational Standards for Supporting Teaching and Learning (NOS‑STL).
• Understanding of diverse social, cultural and physical needs of pupils.
• Interest in how young people learn and behave, and ability to act as a positive role model.
• Passionate commitment to supporting young people.
