Learning Support Assistant – Primary & Secondary PRU

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Rochdale. The role supports both primary and secondary pupils who need additional behavioural and emotional assistance to engage with learning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support for pupils with challenging behaviour.
• Build trusting relationships that encourage confidence and participation.
• Assist teachers in delivering differentiated learning activities.
• Implement consistent behaviour management and de‑escalation techniques.
• Support pupils’ social, emotional and personal development.
• Collaborate with teachers and external professionals to maintain a safe learning environment.

Required profile

• Experience working with children or young people who display challenging behaviour.
• Transferable skills from youth work, mentoring, residential care, sports coaching or similar roles.
• Patient, resilient and able to stay calm in difficult situations.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one) registered on the Update Service.

Required skills

• Knowledge of behaviour management, de‑escalation and restorative approaches (desirable).
• Familiarity with safeguarding and child protection procedures.

What we offer

• Temporary to long‑term contract starting September 2026.
• Daily rate of £110‑£120, dependent on experience.
