Learning Support Assistant – SEMH Specialist

About the role

Prospero Teaching is looking for calm, patient and resilient Learning Support Assistants to work in a specialist SEMH secondary school in Blandford Forum. The school supports pupils aged 11‑16 with complex social, emotional and mental health needs, autism and related behavioural challenges. The role focuses on building trusting relationships and providing trauma‑informed support to help pupils feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tailored, relational support to pupils with SEMH, autism or complex learning profiles.
• Assist young people experiencing anxiety, emotional dysregulation or difficulties with transitions, routines and social interaction.
• Encourage engagement through creative, practical and therapeutic learning activities.
• Promote emotional wellbeing, safety and positive behaviour throughout the school day.
• Help pupils develop communication skills, emotional regulation strategies, social understanding and independence.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams and therapeutic staff to deliver holistic, child‑centred support.

Required profile

• Right to work in the UK.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
• Professional references covering the last 24 months.
• Level 2/3 qualification in childcare, education, health & social care, or relevant SEN/SEMH experience.
