Legal Counsel

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to provide comprehensive legal advice across the Debenhams Group. Based in our central Manchester office, you will support the legal team in advising on a wide range of commercial, regulatory and litigation matters while working closely with multiple business units.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on contentious and non‑contentious matters, including commercial contracts, data protection, advertising, corporate, consumer, employment, intellectual property, property and litigation.
• Support the legal team in reporting to the operating board, plc board and non‑executive directors.
• Collaborate with various business operations across multiple territories and brands, delivering timely and commercially‑focused guidance.
• Identify the need for external legal counsel and manage external relationships.
• Develop and implement legal team strategy aligned with individual brand strategies.
• Prepare and deliver business‑wide training on legal topics and keep the organisation updated on legislative changes.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with experience advising on general legal matters in a commercial environment.
• Strong commercial acumen and ability to provide strategic, business‑focused advice.
• Proven ability to work autonomously, meet tight deadlines and manage multiple stakeholders under pressure.
• Responsive, proactive and capable of delivering high‑quality legal solutions.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to adapt quickly to diverse situations.
