Litigation and Regulatory Team Leader

About the role

St Albans City & District Council is seeking a Litigation and Regulatory Team Leader to head its Legal Shared Service team. This senior position combines people management, strategic influence and specialist legal expertise to support councillors, officers and partner councils.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and develop the Litigation and Regulatory team, fostering a collaborative, customer‑focused culture.
• Manage complex and sensitive litigation and regulatory matters, identifying risk and advising on solution‑focused strategies.
• Provide proactive, pragmatic legal advice to internal and external clients across the council.
• Monitor the team’s budget, seeking efficiencies while maintaining service quality.
• Research, analyse and investigate legal issues, delivering clear advice to councillors and officers.
• Attend Member, Officer, Council, Cabinet and Committee meetings to ensure decisions are lawful.

Required profile

• Proven track record of managing a legal team.
• Legal expertise and experience in litigation and regulatory law.
• Strong interpersonal and client‑management skills.
• Collaborative approach to working across councils and teams.
