Litigation Lawyer (Corporate Governance)

About the role

Trafford Council is seeking a qualified Litigation Lawyer to join its busy Litigation Legal Team. The role offers the chance to work on a wide range of public‑sector legal matters while developing expertise across corporate governance, regulatory enforcement and civil and criminal litigation.

Key responsibilities

• Handle criminal and civil litigation, including advocacy in court.
• Provide advice on licensing law, public protection and employment law.
• Manage enforcement actions for environmental health, food safety, health and safety, planning and trading standards.
• Deal with anti‑social behaviour, local authority housing, non‑domestic rates, inquests, debt recovery and commercial disputes.
• Oversee GDPR, data protection and freedom of information requests.
• Represent the council at committee meetings and liaise with external organisations.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Lawyer/Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives with a current practising certificate.
• Demonstrated experience in one or more of the listed legal areas.
• Ability to develop and advise on complex, sensitive matters and support senior council officers.
• Up‑to‑date knowledge of national trends, policy and legislation affecting local government.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and partnership building skills.
