Local Area Designated Officer (LADO) – Leeds

About the role

The Local Area Designated Officer (LADO) will lead Leeds City Council’s LADO service, responding to allegations involving people who work with children across the authority. You will act as the first point of contact, ensuring swift, fair and legally compliant handling of each case.

Key responsibilities

• Receive and assess all allegations against individuals working with children and determine appropriate action.
• Chair strategy meetings, secure criteria reviews and professional abuse meetings, inviting relevant professionals and meeting statutory timescales.
• Maintain a comprehensive database of allegations, advice, actions and decisions, and produce regular management reports.
• Monitor case progress to ensure timely resolution and consistency with safeguarding policies.
• Provide expert advice to senior managers, other employers and voluntary organisations.
• Represent the service on strategic partnerships such as the Safeguarding Board and Multi‑Agency Looked‑After Partnership.
• Deputise for Integrated Safeguarding Unit members at Child Protection Conferences and Looked‑After Reviews.

Required profile

• Proven ability to analyse complex situations and make considered decisions.
• Experience preparing and presenting detailed reports to varied audiences.
• Strong capability to chair multi‑disciplinary meetings, including those with conflict.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work autonomously in a specialist, high‑responsibility role.

Required skills

• Understanding of relevant legislation, guidance and safeguarding procedures.
• Competence in statistical analysis and data management.
