Mechanical Craftsperson

About the role

South West Water is seeking a Mechanical Craftsperson to join its Regional Repair Workshop in Exeter. You will work on a wide variety of mechanical and electro‑mechanical assets that keep water and wastewater treatment operations running smoothly across the South West.

Key responsibilities

• Strip, inspect, repair and overhaul pumps, gearboxes, blowers, screens and specialist treatment equipment.
• Perform precision assembly, alignment and testing of repaired components.
• Produce detailed inspection reports and recommend repair or replacement actions.
• Manufacture and modify parts using workshop machinery and engineering techniques.
• Support repairs on ATEX‑rated equipment and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Maintain workshop tools, equipment and work areas to high standards.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and develop new technical skills.

Required profile

• Completed apprenticeship in a relevant mechanical or engineering discipline.
• Experience in a structured maintenance or workshop environment.
• Strong fault‑finding and repair skills on rotating equipment.
• Good understanding of mechanical plant and maintenance principles.
• Ability to work safely following risk assessments and safe systems of work.
• Computer literacy for accurate reporting.
