Mechanical Design Engineer – Contract (Ampthill)

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for a six‑month contract to support the development of next‑generation Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) for a leading defence engineering organisation. The role is based in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, with a hybrid working pattern (mandatory onsite Monday and Tuesday). The successful candidate will work with CREO and Windchill to deliver robust mechanical designs for demanding military environments.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical systems and complex mechanisms for IFVs, from concept through detailed design.
• Produce high‑quality engineering drawings and CAD models using CREO.
• Manage product data and documentation within Windchill PLM.
• Perform structural and kinematic calculations, select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes.
• Participate in design reviews and ensure compliance with defence engineering standards.

Required profile

• Proven experience in mechanical design across the full product development lifecycle.
• Strong background designing complex mechanical systems for harsh or demanding environments.
• Eligibility for Security Clearance (SC).
• Previous experience in defence, industrial automation, or related sectors.

Required skills

• Expert knowledge of CREO CAD.
• Experience using Windchill PLM.
• Ability to carry out structural and kinematic calculations.
• Understanding of materials, treatments and manufacturing processes.
