Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

Barker Associates is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its multidisciplinary team and work on a diverse portfolio of building‑services projects across the UK. The role will be based in either the Braintree or Birmingham office and offers the possibility of hybrid working, allowing you to contribute from the office and remotely as required.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver mechanical engineering solutions from concept through to completion for a range of projects.
• Conduct condition and technical surveys of existing buildings and produce clear, concise reports.
• Prepare mechanical calculations, designs, drawings and specifications.
• Produce tender‑stage documentation and support tender evaluations.
• Collaborate with internal multidisciplinary teams and external consultants to ensure coordinated design delivery and compliance with relevant standards.

Required profile

• Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.
• Relevant experience in building services or mechanical design.
• A desire to work towards professional accreditation (e.g., CIBSE, IMechE).
• Full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle.
• Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Familiarity with BIM/Revit workflows.
• Experience using IES software for building services analysis.
