Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

Zenovo is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Cambridge‑based client, a global manufacturer of consumer products. The role involves taking concepts through to manufacturing, working closely with electronics and software teams in a hybrid environment (three days on‑site per week).

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with the wider engineering team to develop and test new product concepts.
• Create designs, feasibility studies and prototypes, iterating based on testing and feedback.
• Design reliable, manufacturable products that meet performance, compliance and cost targets.
• Produce 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings and maintain accurate documentation.
• Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, die‑casting, extrusion and sheet‑metal fabrication.
• Perform engineering analyses including tolerance studies, FMEA, DFSS, mould‑flow reviews and FEA.
• Apply DFM/DFA principles, generate Bills of Materials and support tooling and product approval.
• Work with suppliers and production teams to resolve technical issues and ensure smooth launch.

Required profile

• Mechanical Engineering degree (or HND/HNC) with at least 3 years of product development experience.
• Proven experience designing electrical or electro‑mechanical consumer products.
• Strong knowledge of manufacturing methods and industry standards.

• SolidWorks (solid and surface modelling)
• 3D CAD modelling
• Injection moulding, die‑casting, extrusion and sheet‑metal design
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and mould‑flow analysis
• Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
• DFSS, FMEA and tolerance analysis
